No. 1 has just started having school dinners- he begged and begged for weeks to be allowed to trade in his lunchbox for ‘fine dining’ and finally I caved. I didn’t mind making his packed lunch, though I never reached the creative heights of some of those gorgeous bento boxes (I once put a seaweed face on a boiled egg and realised bento was not for me).
So conversation on the walk home from school now focuses on the days' menu- likes, dislikes , who sat next to who, and it would appear school dinners have improved beyond recognition in the (insert low number here) years since I last had one.
No. 1 was interested to hear about school dinners of yore and I described the good (pizza day), the bad (butterbeans) and the downright odd ( chocolate sponge with mint flavoured custard?) He particularly enjoyed the tale (now passed into legend) of the time when Andrew Worm cut into a roast potato to find green goo festering inside.
This trip down memory lane inspired me to recreate for him a particular favourite. Anyone remember this?
Vanilla tray bake+ jam + coconut= blast from the past.
